Outlook Express 6.0 problems

V

Valerie

Hello

I am running Windows xp -

Problem: Outlook Express opens, however, it will not allow me to access
messages either in my Inbox or in the Folders. To clarify, when you click on
a message either in the Inbox or Folder, the program appears to be running as
normal, however, Task Manager states it is not responding.

Have run several repair programs ie registry etc. to eliminate short cuts,
registry etc. problems... Nothing there. I have also compacted all the
folders ... no change.

The problem began when I was attempting to Import/Export Outlook Express to
Microsoft Outook (2000). Now Outlook will open but not respond at all.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thankyou
Valerie

Is your question about Outlook Express or Outlook?

There are specific newsgroups for each.

Hello Leonard

Re: subject line - The issue is with Outlook Express. I gave up on trying
to rectify anything with Outlook.

I have been to the Newsgroups and did not find an answer there which is why
I am asking here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply.

My best
Valerie

Sounds like corruption. Try the remedies at "Inside Outlook Express:
When Outlook Express crashes or won't start":

Have you looked ay the files relating to your Outlook Express Store
Folder using Windows Explorer for anything unusual? In Outlook Express
ascertain the file path to the Store Folder -Tools, Options,
Maintenance, Store Folder. Close Outlook Express when it has completed.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and
verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked
and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need
to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that
the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.
Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected and then
select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total Size, and
Free Space.

In Windows Explorer using the file path obtained earlier locate the
Folders.dbx, Inbox.dbx, Sent Items. dbx and Deleted Items.dbx files
and note their size. Also check that all dbx files have the same date /
time stamp namely the approximate time you compacted. Note the file
names of any having a different date / time stamp. Also note the two
largest dbx files. Please report what you find in a further message
here.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

How much RAM memory? How large is your drive and how much free space?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Hope this helps.

Folders -169 kb -is this shown as folders.dbx in Windows Explorer?

Inbox - 8616 KB -this is a fairly normal size but if it does not open it
is likely have corrupted. Are messages in there which you wish to
recover?

Sent and Deleted Items at 59 kb are the default size for an empty
folder. Have you moved your messages out of the Sent Items folder or do
you not keep copies of outgoing mail?

What is in the two largest folders? They are over large and because of
this can easily corrupt.

Given that you can access Outlook Express suggests that folders.dbx is
probably not corrupt. What folders exactly are you unable to open?

I would try one more time to compact following these instructions
carefully.

..In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Work Offline followed by File, Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to
interupt or stop the process until it has completed. When it has
completed close and reopen Outlook Express and see if the offending
folders will open.

Hi Gerry

Nope unfortunately.. Mail in Inbox and in folders, simply won't open. I am
copying and hopefully they will import into my other computer.

But thankyou for the suggestions. They are much appreciated.

Hi Gerry and Dave

I solved the problem by importing into my other computer.. I have no idea
what occured with OE6 but from all I've read over the past few days, I'm not
the only person who has experienced strange behaviour from the program.

Fortunate for me that I was able to burn the files and import into another
email program.

Once again, thanks for all your suggestions.

You have two issues here. You need to get Outlook Express to work and
you would like to recover your message. Lets try to resolve the first.

Create a new identity by selecting File, Identities, Add New Identity
etc. When complete test by sending an email to yourself. This should
work. Then select File, Identities, Manage Identities and check the box
before "Use this identity when starting a program".

Stage 2 is to import the folders into the new identity. Do not delete
the folders in the old identity until you are sure you can recover all
messages. If any fail there is a utilty called DBXtract (Donation
$7),which can be used to recover messages from corrupted folders. It
does not always work but it often does. To import select File, Import,
Messages , Microsoft Outlook Express 6, Main Identity, etc.

Sounds like you have a corrupt identity.....try creating a new one.
