My friend and I both have the same version of Outlook Express (6.0).
However, she does not have many of the toolbar buttons that I have. An
example would be the "paperclip" in the toolbar to insert attachments.
She must open "Insert" in the toolbar and choose "Insert file" . In
addition, in the New Message screen, she does not have such options as
Insert Picture and the text alignment choices. When checking
"Customize Toolbar", many of the toolbar buttons are simply not
available to her. Does anyone know if or how we can get the toolbar
buttons?

ajhale,
1. On the "paperclip", reply to an email and at the top do a right click
then choose "customize". You will see the "Available Toolbar Box" appear. In
the left side click on the paperclip once then choose "Add".

2. On the "New Message", In Outlook Express click on "Message", then "New
Message", now clcik on "View", toolbars and check "Formatting Bar".

Hope this helps!

Ctrl + N to open a New Message | Right click on the top Toolbar (below File,
Edit, etc.) | Customize | Select the Paperclip from the left hand pane |
Click the Add button | Or click the Reset button to restore the default set
of buttons on the toolbar in the active window.

If no Toolbar...
Right click the Menu bar (File, Edit, etc.) | Select Toolbar | Then... |
Customize | Select the Paperclip from the left hand pane | Click the Add
button | Or click the Reset button to restore the default set
of buttons on the toolbar in the active window.
Insert Picture and the text alignment choices.

You only get those options if using HTML.

Thank you all very much for your suggestions. I am beginning to think
however that I may not find the answer to this mystery. I had already
checked some of the suggestions that you gave like the "Customize"
screen. Every setting in OE seems to be correct including Rich Text
(HTML), yet I am not able to get the missing buttons into the toolbar.

In the customize screen, the box on the right, (Current toolbar
buttons) reflects that the paper clip button and the check spelling
button are current and should be visible in the toolbar. Yet the
buttons do not appear in the toolbar on the new message screen. I have
tried "Resetting" in the customize screen. I have also tried removing
the buttons and moving them back to the current toolbar buttons box.
Nothing works.

The formating bar is also still incomplete. The alignment bars and the
insert photo icon are not there. If I click View/Toolbars, the
Formating bar is checked. If I uncheck it, the entire bar disappears.
when checked, the bar is there but incomplete.

I don't think that the program is corrupted because my brother has the
same problem on his computer. He also has OE 6.0. I have entertained
the thought that it might be their ISPs which have caused this but then
OE comes with Windows so how could that be?

Sorry this is so lengthy. After all that, my question is...could they
try reinstalling OE or should they just let "sleeping dogs lie"? I
don't want to suggest something to them that would "mess up " their
computers!

Are both machines fully up-to-date at Windows Update and running WinXP SP2?

Does the behavior persist in a new identity (File > Identities > Add new
identity)?

You'd be much better off posting this to an OE-specific newsgroup...and
accessing the newsgroups directly using a newsreader instead of

newsgroup in your default newsreader (OE, most likely).

Thank you so much PA Bear. I think the information you posted will be
very helpful.

Just for giggles, what's your screen resolution?? At the right of the
tool bar do you see a something like a double arrow?? Try clicking on
that. If you screen resolution is set at around 800 X 600 there might
not be enough real estate to display all the icons. Try bumping your
resolution up to 1024 X 768 or higher.......just a thought!
