outlook.exe running multiple times

Hi all

Firstly we are talking about outlook 2003 running on an XP machine.

I have a tricky situation with one of my clients that I have not been able
to resolve, basically every couple of days he complains that outlook won't
open. I remote into his machine and find that he has multiple instances of
outlook.exe running in task manager. Once I kill of all the porocesses I
then have to open outlook up in safe mode before i can get it working again.

- I have tried a detect and repair in outlook and all came up good so i
don't believe it is anything to do with the mailbox.
- The event logs are coming up clean.

So my questions are:

1/ What could be causing this?
2/ how do we go about fixing it?

1) Most likely add-ins. My guess is a virus scanner that integrates with
Outlook or a PDA that is being cradled before Outlook is started.
2) Disable the add-in or your virus scanner integration with Outlook. In
case of the PDA; only cradle it after you start Outlook.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.

Hi Guy's

- Since this is only one machine i don't believe it is the virus software as
we run Trend on all our machines and this is the only one having issues.
- I bet it is some COM process but finding it is the tricky issue.
- leave this with me, at this stage it is not a big problem so the next time
i can get some "alone" time with the PC I will do some hunting and see what
turns up.
- if anyone comes up with any other ideas please let me know.

Regards
Ryan Taylor
