outlook does not recognize one or more names

Hi, I'm using outlook 2000. In order to reply to an email I must delete the
name on the original sender in the "to:" field and re-enter the name of the
sender by clicking on "to:" and selecting them from my contacts. If I recieve
email from someone not in my contact list I have to add them as a contact and
go though the process re-entering the contact in the "to:" field as I
mentioned earlier. If I want to send an email to an address not in my contact
list I have to create a new contact and enter the email address that I want
to send the email to and go though the process re-entering the new contact in
the "to:" field as I mentioned earlier. I also get a message when starting
outlook stating "the server containing the global address list is no longer
available". Can anyone help?

You need to look at the order you specified for address checking in Tools >
Services > Outlook Address Book > Properties....
