Outlook data file dupe listings in navigation pane

After installing Office 2003, I made the mistake of creating an email
account BEFORE redirecting Outlook 2003 to use theexisting .pst file,
residing in the My Documents directory. I finally succeeded, but with the
unwanted consequence that there were TWO personal folder files listed in the
navigation pane. At first, they mirrored one another. After some fiddling,
the details of which I've forgotten, one functioned as a normal default
Outlook data file, while clicking on the second resulted in an error message
to the effect that the object could not be found. This occurred even after
running scanpst.exe.

I created a new personal folders file, and hid the existing one. Outlook
opened two copies of the new file. I concluded the problem was not with the
data file, but with Outlook, so I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003.
Now, displayed in the navigation window, I have two listings for the
original data file, one that works and a dummy (no object found) and THREE
listings, all of which work, of the new data file.

Now I'm thinking there's a registry problem the uninstall didn't fix. Many
thanks for any suggestions.
