Outlook calendar displays multilingual characters?

I'm using Outlook 2002 for email and decided to start using the calendar. On
the calendar page, just beneath the task bar, Outlook displays the month,
date and year in English. Immediately adjacent to the date it displays some
characters from another language. How do I get rid of them? (None of the
other Outlook areas, such as the mailbox, tasks, or notes have this problem).

tools, options, calendar options button - is there an option for an
alternate calendar?

There is a check box to "enable alternate calendar" but it is greyed out and
I can't click on it, and the text box next to it is also greyed out and it
reads "no calendar available."
