I upgrade to Outlook XP from a previous version and now
the program starts up automatically when I logon. Since
outlook is a bloated program and my file is rather large
it take quites some time, resources and hard drive
grinding to open. I have looked through every 'options'
menu I can find and the startup folder and I cannot find
how change this. Any suggestions?

You can prevent it from starting up, as Mary G describes, but you also want
to disable IM integration. Click Tools>Options>Other and uncheck the IM
integration boxes at the bottom.
