We all no how the MSN messenger pops open into the system
tray when opening Outlook or Outlook Express, but can
that be stopped?

Execute 'regedit' using the Start - Run command dialog.

Using the Registry Editor:

1. Browse to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express branch.
2. Select Export from the File menu and save the branch to a safe location, such as a folder named "My Documents\Backup\Registry".
3. Right-click the Outlook Express branch and select New-DWORD Value from the menu.
4. Type "Hide Messenger" as the name.
5. Right-click the "Hide Messenger" value and select Modify from the menu.
6. Change the value data to the number '2' and select hexadecimal as the Base.
7. Close the registry.

That has worked on all my systems and will probably work for yours.

Do you mean Windows Messenger? I didn't think MSN Messenger did that.
