My computer came with Office 97 SBE, but I replaced that with the retail
Office 97 Pro upgrade.
Subsequently, I added separate boot partitions, each of which has a more
recent version of Office.

I now see that although the Office 97 components have retail PIDs, Outlook
98 has an OEM PID.
Would not the install of Office 97 have given Outlook a retail PID?

Was Outlook 97 or Outlook 98 bundled as part of the retail Office 97 Pro?
If not, then I guess I got an OEM version with the PC.

Outlook 98 was a separate product, never bundled in the Office suite. I
think your analysis is sound.

Outlook 97 was bundled in Office 97. Outlook 98 was released later as a
free update which is no longer offered.

Neither, if possible. Both are past their support cycle and don't have the
many improvements in later versions. But if that's all you have, Outlook 98
is better.

I have all the VBA versions of Office, each installed in a separate boot
system.

I almost never use Office 97, other than to compile VB 6 programs automating
some apps, or creating macros that use early binding for those diminishing
cases in which Office 97 support is requested.
