Outlook 2k: Address field defaults

Jeffrey Kaplan

Using Outlook 2000 sp3 on a WinXP sp2 system.

Whenever I add or edit a contact in Outlook, it always adds "United
States Of America" to the country field. I want the country field to
remain blank if the country is the US.

It's not necessary when sending domestic mail. It breaks things when I
do an address lookup on either my desktop or on my PDA and then do a
search with the default results.

Contacts I add via my PDA and then sync across to Outlook do not do
this, and there is no problem with using those addresses.

How can I get Outlook to stop doing this?

Also, how can I get Outlook to not reformat phone numbers? I use
ten-digit dialing on my cellphone, which syncs to/from Outlook. When I
add or edit a contact, I don't use parenthesis on the phone number,
it's entered as a straight ten digit number with dashes: 123-456-7890,
but Outlook always changes it to: (123) 456-7890 which imo is wrong. It
doesn't seem to effect my dialing, but I don't like it and I'd like it
to stop doing that.

I will hire one hopelessly stupid and incompetent lieutenant, but make
sure that he is full of misinformation when I send him to capture the

It is alleged that Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] claimed:
This is the default behavior for Outlook 2000 and cannot be changed.
Normally it is not necessary for the country/region field to be blank in

It's not normally necessary for the country field to have data when
it's the same country that the user is in.

Addresses entered via my PDA and synched to Outlook are fine. It's
only addresses that are entered or edited in Outlook that do this.
Outlook. Instead, users should control how addresses are inserted into Word.
To learn about ways to control how an Address is inserted into Word from
Outlook, take a look here:

It's not Word I'm inserting them to. It's things like Google Maps
Mobile on my handheld, when I look up a map or directions to an
address.

That's how Outlook 2000 works and it can't be changed. Later versions do not
populate the country field automatically. Your Outlook version is very old
and long out of support. I would not expect it to work with current sync
software.

I was afraid of that. But "upgrading" is not an option - this copy of
Office 2000 Small Business came included with a laptop I bought from
Dell about six years ago. The cost for the current version is more
than I'm willing or able to spend on software, and I'm not even sure I
want the current versions.

Tips for the Evil Henchman: 2. Avoid killing people not actively
involved in the rebellion; the Evil Overlord has enough enemies as it
is. Especially don't kill relatives, significant others, or best
friends of the Hero. Normally after the Evil Overlord is overthrown,
henchmen can get off with a few hundred hours of community service, but
if you off the Hero's loved ones, he'll make lasagna out of you.
