Outlook 2007 - Wont send from one (default) account

Guest

My default for sending / receiving mail is btinternet.com
(mail.btinternet.com as both POP3 and SMTP)
I can't send from Outlook using that any more (Though I used to).
Error is something like "Timed out waiting for smtp server response"

I also have a vodafone.net account, from which I can send.

If I send mail directly from IE then it is fine from btinternet.com - No
problems.

Any ideas, please?

Thanks
Bob

I have the same problem, been fine until Tuesday (24th) then I can not send.
Looking at the net it would seem there are thousands of others with the same
problem and as far as I can find there is no solution, so perhaps the more it
is reported the quicker microsoft will come up with a solution!

Have you pinged BTInternet to see if they are having problems?

Hi Milly;
Yes I have - to mail.btinternet.com and it's fine.

I am using Norton antivirus and there was a comment elsewhere in these
threads citing that is problematic. I am following that track at the moment.
I will put any resolution here, but also open to other suggestions?

Hello Bob,
Its a well known issue.
the reason for the same may be any of these.
your third party programs like antivirus or spyware will be blocking the messages as it scans while you send and receive e-mails.
Disable the settings to scan the same and test it.
(your Norton will download updates to safeguard your computer from latest
threats and it might be one of the reason.)
check the ports
start>run>cmd>telnet>incoming server name<->110.
outgoing server name<->25.

Hope this will resolve the issue.

I just have to ask... why are you so sure it's Microsoft's problem, since,
as Bob pointed out, he can send from the same machine using a different
account? That would tell me it isn't necessarily a Microsoft problem.

And, fwiw, Microsoft doesn't really truly read the newsgroups. If you want
to be 100% sure your problem is reported, call them.

That said, I believe btinternet also listens on port 587, so try changing
the SMTP port to that.

Thanks, Raj;

Sadly Telnet will not run under Vista Ultimate. (Telnet is not recognised as
an internal or external command")

Updated Norton & Stopped it insofar as I am able

No change

That does seem to have fixed it. (Sorry if that sounds "not so sure", but
that is probably my reaction to things I know little about).
Changed an smtp number in Account settings /<account name>/more settings
/advanced from 25 to 587 and it all sprang back into life.

Thank you, f.h. - It worked for me!

To test the fix, I re-tried my wife's btinternet account without changing it
- still didn't work.
Changed it to 587 and it was fine.

So thank you - enthusiastically!
Can you tell me in layman's terms what happened? What it was I changed? Was
it the port?
How come the vodafone one works (on 25)?

What is the meaning of life, the universe, everything? (Yes - I know...)

Bob, trying to learn something from here. With ref to your response quote:
"Changed an smtp number in Account settings /<account name>/more

Can you please show from step one to change the settings. Thanks and regards

Certainly, though this might be the blind leading the partially sighted!.....

I have MS Vista Ultimate and Office 2007.

In Outllok 2007:

Click on Tools > Account Settings > Double click on Account to change
Should get a box - "Change E-mail Account"

Click on "More Settings"
Select "Advanced" Tab

On mine, "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" was 25. I changed that to 587, as advised

OK > Next > Close > Finish

and all was well (The one sat in the out tray didn't go - I deleted that and
re-sent from scratch)

I hope it works for you, though the "587" might be peculiar to btinternet -
we are already beyond my level of competence in this.

Vodafone works on 25 because that's the default SMTP port which should work,
even with BT. Why BT doesn't, I honestly don't know. If I was on bt, I'd
look at the actual network traffic to see why it's failing, but I'm not, so
I can't.
