Outlook 2007 with MS Office 2003

I am currently using Microsoft Office 2003 and am very happy with it. I
would like to purchase a copy of Microsoft Outlook 2007 and install it. Will
Outlook 2007 be compatible with the MS Office 2003 that I am using? I don't
want to buy the software until I'm certain it will work. I am using MS XP
Home version.

Thanks,
Rocko

Yes and no. You won't be able to use Word as your email editor. All the
other functions such as Send-to should work AFAIK....

You might be but you can't use Word 2002 as your email editor with Outlook
2007, which I presume is what the OP was meaning by "compatible...

At the risk of sounding really dumb, when does one need to use MS Word for
Outlook editing?

Many people do because it offers the same functionality in email composing
as in a normal document - the built-in Outlook mail editor (at least for
2002 and prior) is very restricted by comparison...

Outlook 2007 ALWAYS uses Word for editing. It contains a subset of Word.
While you should be able to install Outlook 2007 in an Office XP
environment, you will probably lose mail merge, if that's a feature you
need.
