outlook 2007 Vista email takes up to three hours to show up

Since yesterday it takes up to three hours for an email message to show up
in my inbox. I use Outlook 2007 on Vista. When I prompt Send/Receive I get an
error message. I can accelerate the procedure by logging out altogether and
then restarting but this is a real bore.

Help
 
what type of email account and what type of connection to it do you use?
Have you rebooted recently?
