Outlook 2007 Message Categories

In Outlook 2003, if a message has a category assigned, that category is
automatically assigned to any replies or forwards of the original message.
This does not seem to be the case in Outlook 2007. No category is assigned
to a message sent as a reply or forward of a message with a category.

Is there a config setting that changes this behaviour now?
Has the behaviour been changed by design?
Is this something that needs to be fixed?

Cheers

I think that's by design. In what scenarios would you find it useful for the recipient to get a message with a particuilar category on it?

That is indeed the case. Note that by default there is also a rule enabled
to strip the category from all incoming mails. In Outlook 2007 categories
are promoted more as a local sorting mechanism. I haven't found a way around
this and change it back to Outlook 2003 behavior. Disabling the rule and
manually reassigning the category on reply and forwards is the current
workaround.

I have found it very useful along with others in my team to have the category
remain with messages as they are replied to or forwarded among the team.

We also use a product called NeoPro (www.emailorganizer.com) which makes
greater use of categorizing messages. Working this way also makes it possible
to view all messages by category, sent and received, across all mail stores
(Exchange Mailbox and PST files).

Not having the category automatically applied means remembering to set the
category on every reply or forward of a message.

That would be useful feedback to submit with the Send a Smile tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A2E1F4E2-BC0F-4403-B09F-7A677D55F274. This tool will transmit your comments and a screenshot back to Microsoft. As Jensen Harris explains at http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/archive/2006/06/23/644160.aspx, all SaS comments do get read and routed to the right people at Microsoft.

Thanks Sue, I apprecaite your help.
I've downloaded the tool and sent the feedback.

You can control this behavior by using polices. In the Miscellaneous section
choose "Managing Categories during e-mail exchanges"

Exchange 2007 also has options to control this on the Exchange server level.

Hi

I am running Outlook 2007 on Vista Home Premium. How do I get at
policies in that, so I can amend this behaviour?

Thanks
Gordon
