All my attachments in pdf format are sent out as winmail.dat files.

Outlook 2007 is not usable if you want to send out pdf attachments.

Any ideas where the bug is?

I use the latest release issued on Sept 15.

First thing to do is to make sure you're not sending in Rich Text Format.

This does not resolve the issue in Outlook 2007. Those parameters were
verified without sucsess...

What type of account are you using and in what mail format are you sending?
When you send a message to yourself with a pdf-attachment what do you
receive?

I use a pop3 account. I don't send it to myself, I send it to a coworker who
uses Eudora. She receives all my pdf attachments as winmail.dat files when I
use Outlook 2007. If I send her the same attachment using Outlook 2003 then
I have no problems.

So the problem is with Outlook 2007. I have options email format as plain
text.
I checked the email address and it says, let outlook select the best way.

Ironnically in Outlook 2003, my setting is use html but she still receives
the proper pdf attachment.

So you see the problem is outlook 2007.

No, that is still inconclusive.

Is this only to this coworker or to any? Also what happens again; what
happens when you send it to yourself?

I don't get the HTML/Outlook irony...??? How does that relate to the issue?

ANother thing to try is setting her address to plain text.

I send the same emails to two co-workers and they both receive winmail.dat
error messages. Customers on the outside were also receive winmail.dat
files.

The problem is with people who don't use Outlook . Not everybody uses
OUtlook, did you know that?

So the issue is obviously wiht Outlook 2007 since Outlook 2003 works
perfectly well.

Putting the parameters to plain text does not change anything, people still
receive the winmail.dat file.

Even if I send a zip or a .rar file the person who use Eudora get the
winmail.dat file.

Just as a warning; if you are trying to insult us, you are on your own. Note
that people who are answering these posts are doing this in their own time
and are not employed by Microsoft.

Now, back to the issue. What add-ins do you have installed? Are you using a
virus scanner that integrates with Outlook? Disable this integration and try
again.

When you say it works with Outlook 2003; is this on the exact same computer?
If you would downgrade to Outlook 2003 right now on this computer without
changing anything else it will work?

It is not possible to disable NorTon Anti virus while sending out messages.

In any case, it works with Outlook 2003 and not 2007.

I tried outlook 2007 and 2003 on the same pc with no luck. Works in 2003
and not in 2007. I now have 2007 installed on another machine with still no
luck.

I do have some add ins and they work ok. I don't see how addins would
affect sending out email.

Someone mentioned mime encoding but I don't know where to play with those
settings in Outlook 2007.

Which other add-ins do you have installed?

I did send a pdf attachment to somebody with Thunderbird. He did receive
the pdf file as an attachment. I am using Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird.
So it's possible.

Why would Nortan A not remove the pdf attachment with Outlook2003 and
remove it with 2007?

Can you try and send an attachment to someone wiht Eudora?

Outgoing messages are not scanned in my Norton AnTi virus.

I don't know anybody who uses with Eudora, so I cannot try that. But I
have no problems with PDF attachments in Outlook 2007. I don't use any
virus scanner add-ins.

I am getting the same behavior with Outlook 2007 Final. It is
definitely a problem with how Outlook is sending mail. If I send an
attachment to someone running a version of Outlook, they can open it
just fine. If I send it to someone using any other mail client
(including most web-based mail clients), they just see winmail.dat.

That's proof that yolu are sending in RIch Text format. Only Outlook can
handle the winmail.dat attachment. Switch to Plain Text or HTML format.

I tried that, but it didn't help. Even if I specify plain-text, the
recipient still receives winmail.dat.

Fortunately I found a handy utility that helps. It definately doesn't
solve the bug, but at least it makes winmail.dat usable:

Open the contact's record and double-click the person's email address.
There should be an "Internet format" drop-down at the bottom. What does it
say?
