Outlook 2007 addressbook

Hi,
Just purchased new computer with Vista Ultimate. Everything seemed to
transfer smoothly from my XP computer using "Windows Easy Transfer" but when
I go to my addressbook in Outlook 2007 it tells me I don't have one and need
to create it in the Contacts Properties dialoge box. When I go there the
"Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" and "Name of the address book"
fields are Greyed out and I cannot check it to display it. How can I fix this?

Thanks for your help,
Steve

You can't. This is one of many bugs in WET. You should never use it for
Outlook. It doesn't work.
You must create a new Outlook profile from scratch and migrate your data to
it using a supported method.

Hi Russ,
I already used WET to transfer from XP/Outlook 2003 to Vista/Outlook 2007. I
can't change, add, delete, or see the address book (my contacts are fine).

"You must create a new Outlook profile from scratch and migrate your data to
it using a supported method"

How is this done and what is a supported method?
Thanks!

Currently there is only one supported method for migrating Outlook data from
a previous installation: Copy the Outlook data file, open it in the other
installation, designate that file as the default, then restart Outlook. You
must do the same thing to migrate data to a new profile. To create a new
Outlook profile, read these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829918&Product=out2003

Nowhere will you see confirmation by Microsoft that WET is not supported for
data transfer in Outlook, and it certainly should be. But it isn't because
it doesn't work. Migrating data from one installation of Outlook to another
has become ridiculously difficult. It is now so counterintuitive that almost
no one can guess correctly how to do it because none of the usual data
transfer methods one normally uses will work. It gets worse with each
version. I wish they would fix this and get it right.

Hi Russ,
I appreciate your assistance, but in Vista64 I cannot find a Mail icon in
control panel. I checked Outlook help and it said it to use User Accounts
from control panel, but there is still no Mail icon or link.
Some additional info: There is only one login account on the computer.
Thanks,

Russ, Sue,
Thanks to both of you for your assistance.

I found the 32bit control panel and the mail applet.

I created a new profile, imported all files/folders from my current
outlook.pst, and now I can see my contact folder as my address book.

Unfortunately my email account settings and rules were not imported. Is
there a way to do this? I have multiple email accounts and many dozens of
rules that would be pain to re-enter.
Thanks again,

Hi Sue,
I have been using Outlook 2007 for over a month (w/o an address book) so I
can't easily go back to my original .pst file.

I guess my only choice would be to go back to my original .pst file, clear
out all folders, and then import everything from my current .pst file. I
would then only lose changes I have made to my rules and account's in the
last month.

btw: Where are the rules and account info stored, in the registry (I found
keys in the registry corresponding to my Outlook profiles, but they were not
editable)? It would have been nice if they were in an XML file so they could
be ported, modified, etc.

Thanks for your help,

It's a 32-bit applet, so it doesn't appear with all the other in Control
Panel. Instead, you have to look for it under Additional Items | View 32-bit
Control Panel Items.

Inexplicable. I've never used Vista64 but I know of no version with a
licensed version of Outlook installed that does not have a Mail icon in
Control Panel.

Hi Russ,
I appreciate your assistance, but in Vista64 I cannot find a Mail icon in
control panel. I checked Outlook help and it said it to use User Accounts
from control panel, but there is still no Mail icon or link.
Some additional info: There is only one login account on the computer.
Thanks,

:

Currently there is only one supported method for migrating Outlook data
from
a previous installation: Copy the Outlook data file, open it in the
other
installation, designate that file as the default, then restart Outlook.
You
must do the same thing to migrate data to a new profile. To create a new
Outlook profile, read these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829918&Product=out2003

Nowhere will you see confirmation by Microsoft that WET is not supported
for
data transfer in Outlook, and it certainly should be. But it isn't
because
it doesn't work. Migrating data from one installation of Outlook to
another
has become ridiculously difficult. It is now so counterintuitive that
almost
no one can guess correctly how to do it because none of the usual data
transfer methods one normally uses will work. It gets worse with each
version. I wish they would fix this and get it right.

Hi Russ,
I already used WET to transfer from XP/Outlook 2003 to Vista/Outlook
2007.
I
can't change, add, delete, or see the address book (my contacts are
fine).

"You must create a new Outlook profile from scratch and migrate your
data
to
it using a supported method"

How is this done and what is a supported method?
Thanks!

:

You can't. This is one of many bugs in WET. You should never use it
for
Outlook. It doesn't work.
You must create a new Outlook profile from scratch and migrate your
data
to
it using a supported method.

Hi,
Just purchased new computer with Vista Ultimate. Everything seemed
to
transfer smoothly from my XP computer using "Windows Easy Transfer"
but
when
I go to my addressbook in Outlook 2007 it tells me I don't have one
and
need
to create it in the Contacts Properties dialoge box. When I go
there
the
"Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" and "Name of the
address
book"
fields are Greyed out and I cannot check it to display it. How can
I
fix
this?

Thanks for your help,
Steve
