It's annoying that I open an email and go back to the Inbox. I might then
delete that email but the windows with the emails stays open.

That's a funny statement :)

Why do you leave items open and delete them via the main interface instead
of via the opened item? Why do you leave them open in the first place?

Note that when you delete an item it only gets moved to the Deleted Items
folder. When you permanently delete it, it will close the opened item as
expected.

Because I can.
I often open an email then go back to the Inbox and open another email to
compare them.
Then I decide to delete the first email via the Inbox but find it stays in
an open window.

Not so. Permanently deleting, either via shift-delete in the inbox, or
delete in the Deleted folder, leaves open items open. You can get the deleted
item back into the folder from which it was deleted by saving it and
confirming the "make a copy" prompt (2007).

Funny, it does on one of my systems. Must be a BETA patch I have installed
causing this change in behavior. Not sure, haven't fleshed it out
completely.
On a Plain Vanilla Outlook it will indeed leave the items open and give you
a second change to retrieve.

Which method is preferred is just a matter of taste I think. I can find good
arguments for either behavior.

But there can be no good argument for leaving open a temporarily or
permanently deleted email.
