Outlook 2003 not responding using Word as email editor

Have XP Home, using Office 2003 since it first came out - no problems.
Suddenly Outlook hourglasses and goes to not responding when trying to reply
to any email.

Microsoft reporting says WinFax PRO is the problem - but I don't have it
installed. Uninstalled Windows FAX just in case - no help.

I have done an Office repair, Windows and Office updates are up to date.

Removed Word as email editor from Outlook options, and problem goes away, so
it is apparently something between Word and Outlook. Word opens and saves
fine, so it is OK on its own.

Only recent change has been to uninstall expired Norton 2006 and Install
McAfee Internet Security instead. Has been a few weeks tho, and all running
fine since.

I guess a WIndows rollback or uninstall/reinstall are my options at this
point. Just wondered if anyone had heard of similar issue. Thanks in
advance.

Go to Addin Manager and see if you can disable the offender. It could be
Adobe or another addon like Fax. Tools, Options, Other, Advanced options,
Addin mgr. Also check Com Manager while you're there.

Thanks, but where is add-in manager?

Only Add-ins are McAfee email scanner and Exchange Extension properity pages.
Removed Exchange then McAfee - no change. Nothing in Com Manager.

Thanks for trying.

If you use Detect and Repair in Outlook's Help menu, does the problem disappear?

It appears that the message stating that WinFax Pro is causing a problem is due to an error in a Microsoft error reporting database that falsely flags that program as the culprit when folks clearly have not installed it.

I had already done the Office repair, but tried the Outlook deteck and repair
too. No help.

Thanks.

I have a very similar problem with Outlook 2000 under XP - ok once the use of
Word as editor is deleted. But I'd like very much to know how to fix it
properly - any ideas?

Gave up and did an XP Windows Restore (Rollback) to the day before when it
was working fine, and all is well again. (Bless you Microsoft - best feature
ever!)

Just an FYI, I did find upon rollback and running Spybot, that my McAfee had
been turned off in the registry even tho it showed on in the systray! I
think something got in and hosed it myself.

If you can remember when all was well, I'd do the restore if I were you.
Then run Spybot before you surf.

We (Outlook MVPs) have seen this type of error message being reported in news groups for a few days now. Let us check with the MSFT folks to see what is up and if there is a common fix for the issue. It appears that D&R, which usually works, does not in this case.

In the meantime, if you try a new mail profile, does it remove that error message?

No, you have a problem with Outlook 2000, a completely different program from a code standpoint.

Start a new thread as what is suggested (new mail profile) for Outlook 2003 may not (and probably won't) work in Outlook 2000.
