In Outlook 2003 I have lost the show new mail alert facility although it is
ticked. I see the Outlook yellow square in my taskbar instead of the
envelope.

How can I fix this?

Is it a matter of you using Windows XP and that XP is hiding the new mail
icon? You can check this by right-clicking the Taskbar Notification Area
and chooing Customize Notifications. Look for the "You have new unopened
items" icon and make sure its behavior is set to "Always show".

Brian,

Sounds exactly what I want, but your procedure does not reveal "Customise
Notifications" on my XP Pro SP2?

You can't right-click on a blank area by the clock in the system tray?

Brian,

All mine. I am the administrator.

Perhaps I should reiterate my problem. The notification does appear with
its set transparency but, and forgive me if this sounds senile, I was sure
I used to get a permanent envelope in the taskbar when new mail had arrived.
Now if I miss seeing the notification (as I'm using two displays) instead of
the envelope appearing I get a constant Outlook yellow square in the startup
section oif the taskbar

You should still get an envelope in the Notification Area of the Taskbar
(what was once called the System Tray). You should be able to see it until
you read a message - not just reading a new message, but reading any message
will turn it off. Is your Taskbar locked? Can you access it via
Start>Control Panel>Appearance and Themes>Taskbar and Start Menu>Customize?
In fact, If you always show the entire Notification Area (i.e., the "Hide
inactive icons" checkbox on the Taskbar and Start Menu applet is not
checked), then I believe "Customize Niotifications on the context menu will
be inactive.

The Outlook icon will appear in the Notification Area whenever Outlook is
running. It doesn't have anything to do with new mail notification.
