Outlook 2003 isn't closing 50% of the time

Outlook appears to close but my backup program reports that the pst files are
open and so will not touch them. I also get warning messages at the set
intervals that Outlook has failed to connect with my ISP. Task Manager does
not list Outlook as an active program.

This problem is irregular but occurs about 50% of attempted daily backups. A
reboot cures the problem.

My PC is running XP SP2.
 
In Task Manager, check the Processes tab for outlook.exe (clicking the title
bar sorts the processes alphabetically)
 
To add, usually caused by an add in, or some other app interfacing with the
data file, eg Fax / sync / DTS software
