Outlook 2003: Getting News Reader to Work

G

Glebish

Hi...
I just got the standard Office 2003 Upgrade. In my previous version (2000),
I could read news from Outlook. When I try to configure it, using the info
in the help screen, it doesn't work. Clicking on News in the right pane
produces a plus sign, but as soon as I cross over to the left pane and try
to move it towards Go (as directed), the plus sign turns into an X. And
nothing happens. Of course, it could be worse. At least I can still use
Outlook Express (as I am now doing), but it would be nice if my shiny new
Outlook 2003 could do what I wish it could.

Any suggestions.

Thx

Hello...
I realize (at least in part) where I went wrong. I thought (from the
instructions) that you had to drag it to Go in the next (ie left pane). No,
it was supposed to be to the word Go up on the Menu Bar. The only problem is
that I somehow deleted the News link from the right pane...so now I have
nothing to drag. I tried uninstalling Outlook and reinstalling it, but it
seems to remember everything it shouldn't and didn't fix things. Perhaps I
have to uninstall the whole Office suite and reinstall it. Again, if anyone
has any ideas, they would be appreciated.
thx

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.

Thanks Russ...

That seems to work. One small additional question...unlike the mail and
other items in the Go list, there is no little icon next to News (nor is
there a shortcut like the others. This doesn't matter, of course, but I
wondered if it was supposed to be like the others...or is it meant to be a
little different.

Hello again...
A further question about the news reader and Outlook.
I got the Go button to display News and it now opens the Outlook 2003 News
Reader. However, when I check Internet Options/Programs...it says that
Outlook Express is the news reader (in fact, it's the only option). Are they
the same thing with a different face plate?

Yes. Outlook has always used OE for news reading. Sometimes it tries to
trick you with a Title Bar that says "Outlook Newsreader" but it is still
OE.
