outlook 2003 .doc attachments

When I receive a .doc attachment in Outlook 2003, and double click on it,
Word 2003 opens it in review mode (two pages side by side) instead of normal
mode. Opening a document outside of Outlook opens normally inside Word. Is
this a Word issue or a Outlook issue, and how do I fix it?

That is a Word option. Outlook doesn't control how attachments are being
opened.
To change this behavior;
Open Word-> Tools-> Options-> tab General-> Allow starting in Reading Layout
