Outlook 2003 compact does not work

I have a pst file under Outlook 2003 that is ~4.5GB in size. When I
tried to compact it, The "Compacting Now" window pop up for a couple
of seconds then went away. The file size of the selected pst remains
unchanged (even though I have permanently deleted several hundred MBs
of emails from it). This pst resides in drive D which has ~6GB free
space. Drive C has about 1GB free space. Has anyone encounter this
problem before? There was no warning/error messages. I am assuming
that it is not using drive C for working space, as there is no message
complaining not enough space. Any help would be appreciated.

What size is your C drive?
You have to delete a significant amount, before Compact does anything
Thought of archiving?

My drive C is 120GB but only 1 GB is free. I was trying to find out
what is the drive space requirement when invoking compact but couldn't
find any useful info. And there is no warning/error message - it just
quit after a couple of seconds without doing anything. I also couldn't
find out whether the work space is going to be on the same drive as
the pst to be compacted, or use the default drive C.

Well your free space is woefully inadequate for any efficient use of Win,
let alone anything else, You need at least 12gb of free space, and untill
you rectify this you cannot expect win or any other app to function
correctly. Time for either a major cleanup or migrate to a larger disk
