Outlook 2003 - Can receive but not send e-mail

I configured my Outlook for POP and SMTP as instructed by the hosting co.
Outlook receives e-mail fine, but when I try to send an e-mail, I get one of
the following errors:

'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP)
server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you
continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).'

I've checked all my settings. Any idea what could be causing this? Thank you.

try this:

go into properties for the account, click more settings, outgoing server tab
and select a tick in 'my outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'.
leave 'use same settings as my incoming mail server' checked.

if no joy then it may need a port number from your email supplier.

I dont think it is anything to do with the outgoing server authentication.
Rather it is something to do with the antivrus or firewall you use.
Try in Safe mode with Networking. If you have no problems there, you may
have to disable the mail scanning and real time scanning features of your AV.
