Outlook 2003 - automatically find names

C

ChrisB

When I type in a name to address an email, unless I have mailed them already
and they appear on the recently used list, I then get a Check Names dialogue
box and have to then search for additional names, even though the name is in
the Address Book.

Not sure why this is happening - I do have the Option to Suggest Names
checked?

Any ideas?

Thanks

State the steps you are using more clearly. You are talking about two
completely different features here, the first is autocompletion, the second
autoresolution. The latter will not prompt you for a search unless you have
entered an invalid email address or your Outlook Address Book Service is
corrupt. Is it?

I don't believe my Outlook Address Book is corrupt.

This is what I do:

1. New email - type in name (not email address) of person I know exists in
Contacts (as I used to do for OLXP)
2. Name stays as I have typed it
3. Press Send
4. I get Check Names dialogue box
5. I click on Show More Names
6. This takes me to Address Book dialogue box and cursor is on the name
that I typed earlier
7. I choose name and press OK

In Outlook XP, the name would automatically be picked up without the
additional steps.

Once I have chosen the name, Outlook does automatically find it. It is just
for new names.

So which Contacts Folder is your Outlook Address Book set to check first?

I think I have sorted this out. I looked up the instructions on how to
remove a Contacts folder - i.e. Tools > Email Accounts > View or change
existing directories or address books, etc. I removed it and set it up
again and it appears to be behaving 'normally' now

Thanks anyway for your help - it's good to have this group which really is
so useful.

That's what I was trying to tell you. Your Outlook Address Book Service was
pointing to an invalid reference to a Contacts Folder. Resetting it fixes
the problem.
