Outlook 2003 automatically deletes all read messages in inbox

All messages which have been read are expunged (not deleted) from the system
when I move to another function i.e. hold, deleted items, or whatever. When
I return to the inbox all messages have been expunged and are not on the
deleted file or anywhere else on the system.
If anyone can help please advise.

Doubt anything is being "expunged."
Sounds to me like you have your view set to unread messages.
Do tell us what your view settings are if you need help from a distance.
