Outlook 2003 and Cisco VPN

Hello everyone,

Windows XP SP2 all patches
Office 2003 pro All patches
New notebook
Cisco VPN
Exchange Server 5.5 sp4
McAfee Antivirus ver 8 (Scan email Enabled)

Problem is the user will connect to the VPN then the Exchange server and
start replying to an email after typing for about 20 minutes Outlook will
freeze up and he can only re-boot.
Outlook locks up and he looses what he typed into the reply.
Any suggestions at all will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time,
Terry

Hi Robert,
When outlook lockups,
a.. The PC is usable
a.. (you said you can surf the internet and the user can also, close
Oltlook and re-start it with another profile (Not our Exchange 5.5 Server
but a POP account) Hecan send and receive email with this profile.
a.. I'm waiting for an answer from the remote use to the following
question "How do you quit the locked-up copy of Outlook" ?
b.. When Outlook locks-up the whole PC does NOT lockup (as stated above)
c.. When Outlook locks-up it ALWAYS happens with the profile setup to use
our Exchange 5.5 server, NEVER with the POP Profile.
d.. I think the user is always replying to email?
a.. I'm not sure if the email he is replying to has an attachement or
not. Tippically these Sales Guys send large Excel attachements and edit them
by clicking on the attachement in email (they do NOT do a save as and then
edit the file So, my best guess is this is the answer to why they loose Data
when Outlook hangs)
Again Thanks for any help into this situation,

Terry

Hello all,
We are having a similar problem with almost the same config with a few
exceptions.
Our user is on our local network (no VPN) and we are using Exchange server
2003.
The XP PRo laptop with Outlook 2003 locks up when doing a reply and all open
messages are lost if the draft save did not happen.
Any help on this would be great!

Thanks
Gary

Robert,

Update, I was traviling yesterday and was in a Hotel with some kink of high
speed connection.
I have stayed in this location before with out any problem, however, last
night I was experiancing exactly what my users are complaining about.
Below are two eamil with the user (Dave),
the first email I am asking for his specific comment on the problems
the second email was from me to his from the hotel and his reply:

First email:
===============
Hi Dave,
Please make any changes needed below I need to make sure I understand this
correctly:

When outlook lockups,
The PC is usable correct (you said you can surf the internet and also, start
Outlook again and send and receive email with the comp u serve profile,
Correct?
Dave> Correct.

How do you quit the locked-up copy of Outlook ?
Dave> I just close the application.

When Outlook locks-up the whole PC does NOT lockup (as stated above)
Dave> Correct

When Outlook locks-up it's ALWAYS when you're using our Corporate email
(Exchange)
Your Work profile NEVER with the POP Email account / Profile, correct?
Dave> Correct

Are you always replying to email?
a) Or are you creating a NEW email (I think you said you are replying)?
b) Or are you locking up with both, Creating a New and Replying to
e-mail?
Dave> I've never noticed "when" .I can be typing and the password screen
will pop up or the computer in the bottom right hand of the screen will say
that Outlook is no longer connected to the Microsoft data exchange, etc.

If you're replying does the email always have an attachment?
Dave> No

==============================================

Second email from the hotel:

Dave> What you're describing below on the VPN connection is exactly what
happens.

Dave,

Oh My, I'm at the Dan Valley Crow Plaza (Toronto) right now. I'm connected
to the High Speed and the VPN using Outlook 2003 (correction, trying to use
Outlook 2003) Holly crap this stinks :(

Pop - up every minute or two stating "Outlook is is trying to retrieve data
from the Microsoft Exchange server MAIL" (note: "MAIL" is out Exchange
server net bios name)

Major delays etc. I really feel your pain now.

Oh My painful, I have a really good idea what I'm looking for.

Thanks
