Outlook 2002 runtime error

F

Frank Pulsucki Jr.

For some reason I am having trouble running outlook 2002. When I start it
the program will pop up with a runtime error and only thing I can do is
click ok and outlook then closes. How can I correct this?? I searched the
MS KB I found a possible solution but I cannot even get the program to run
to be able to click the menu buttons!!

I tried holding the CTRL key down while starting and it asked if I wanted to
start in safe mode to which I replied yes but same issue happens.

I also tried the repair Office option but I still get same error!!

Any thoughts???

What is the exact error you get? Anything logged to the Event Viewer? Also
do you have SP3 + updates installed?

If you have a virusscanner that integrates with Outlook disable the
integration and try again.

The exact error is:
Runtime error
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way. Please contact the applications support team

There is no entry in the event viewer that I can find

I do have SP 3 installed with all updates that are listed for Office XP. My
machine is Win XPPro SP2. I am using Norton Internet Security that is
current and I have disabled virus scan of email and office integration
(they were integrated and working up until I recently installed .NET on this
computer to run Norton Ghost 9.0. I also used the msconfig tool to disable
auto start items with no success either.

Another item to note is when it starts Outlook it opens and then needs to
run a scan on the archive folders because it states it was improperly shut
down. I tried the scanpst.exe file to scan that file and the tool completed
and said it fixed errors so I guess what else can I try?? I tried a repair
and reinstall of office with same results. I also retried "safe" start of
office. I do have lots of e-mail in my numerous mailboxes could that be the
trouble??

I am not sure but it appears it has to do with my archive folder (I am not
sure how large or how many messages but I copied the older backed up version
from 3 months ago and it is now working....either that or when I ran
scanpst.exe on each *.pst folder and corrected errors it found. I have lots
of e-mail to catch up on so I am going to try to copy back the older version
or archive.pst and see if that is it.

What is a good way to archive e-mail and break it up?? I do not want this
to happen again!!!

The maximum size of an Outlook 97-2002 pst-file is 2GB. Depending on your
configuration you should have good performance up to around 800MB. Also
think about backing up. When you back-up to CD you might want to start a new
one when getting near the 700MB or you'll have to compress it first.
