Hi all
Where i work they have recently banned us syncing our pdas to the network.
This was a pain for me as I am on the move a lot and need my calender and
contacts. I managed to get round it by exporting pst files, sending them
home and syncing there. However, they have cottoned on to this and have
banned exporting pst files. I have pointed out that there is nothing
stopping me printing out my calender and typing it all in so they arent
really getting far with this policy

However, anyone got any bright ideas how else i can get round this
electronically? Are the calender and contacts stored anywhere by default or
is there some other clever way i can do this?
TIA

Note that there are a lot of sysadmins (myself included) in these groups, so
asking how to bypass your company's security policies is sort of like asking
a police officer where to buy dope. Unwise. ;)

If this is a real need for you, talk to your manager and see if they'll make
an exception for you. If not, don't push it. It isn't your data - it's the
company's.

good point!

But its only my calender and contacts im interested in - like i say, I can
still print it out and type it in back home, but its just hassle. And im in
danger of missing meetings etc.

The annoying thing is they let people with business owned pdas sync, but not
if you have bought your own one - doesnt sound fair to me. I dont want one
of their pdas otherwise i have wasted my money buying my own one - and mine
is far superior. They also wouldnt let me connect at home if it was a work
one.

Well, this does sound silly to me, but again, it's their network & their
data. As I said, take this up with your manager. If they're concerned about
maintaining data security, they wouldn't let anyone sync to anything at
all - anyone with a PDA can easily sync the data at home to their local
computer. But it's not my network, so my words mean little.

Darn tootin'! No non-company items are EVER allowed to connect to our
network. You need a PDA, you ask for one to be provided by the agency. If
you don't need one, you don't get it. It is a minor inconvenience for you
but a major security wall for the company. How many corporate networks are
violated by someone bringing in a personal laptop/pda and connecting to the
network and instantly infecting the entire corporate environment?

I would say your company is being prudent with its policies. If you want to
mirror your calendar, just forward your appointments home or copy yourself
on them if you create them. As for the contacts, if they are personal
contacts and not business contacts (potential for conflict of interest), I
would just print them out and retype them at home.

Trying to bypass your corporate security is never a good idea.
