Outlook 2002 Error Message

A

Andy Russell

I get the following error message each time I start up
Outlook 2002: "an extension failed to initialize". I ran
Detect and Repair and I still get the message.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Andy,

It sounds like you have an add-in that's failing to load at startup. To see
the list of installed add-ins do the following:

1. On the Tools menu click Options.
2. On the Other tab click Advanced Options.
3. Click Add-In Manager

Any item whose checkbox is checked is enabled. You can try disabling these
items one at a time or all at once. Either way, you need to isolate the
add-in that's causing this error. You will need to exit/restart Outlook each
time you disable one or more items.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Greg. I went to Add-In Manager and
it's empty. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Andy

Greg,

Thanks for your continued attention to my problem, I
appreciate it.

I still get the error in Safe Mode. I searched for the
extend.dat file anyway, I was going to try as you
suggested, but couldn't find it. I found an
old 'extend.dat' from an old Outlook 2000 backup that I
did a while ago. That file is 3KB and is dated 5/1/01. I
made sure to search both of my hard drives.

Thanks again,
Andy

Andy,

Try holding down the CTRL key as you launch Outlook. When prompted for
starting Outlook in Safe mode click Yes. Do you get the error now? If not,
do the following:

1. Exit Outlook
2. Locate and <rename> your Extend.dat file (for example, rename Extend.dat
to Extend.old). You can search your drive for this file.
3. After renaming Extend.dat, start Outlook.

Please let me know if you still get the error after doing the above steps.

Andy,

If the problem still occurs in Safe mode, I think the problem might be
coming from a COM add-in (which are not usually disabled in Safe mode). So,
to see the list of installed COM add-ins do the following:

1. On the Tools menu click Options.
2. On the Other tab click Advanced Options.
3. Click COM Add-Ins.
4. Remove any COM Add-Ins listed.

By default, Outlook does not have any COM Add-ins. So, if you have one or
more COM Add-Ins listed they were installed via 3rd party product. These
steps may require you to reinstall these 3rd party products.
