I am using Windows XP with Office 2000. When I open Outlook, it either
opens, but doesn't respond, then shuts down after a minute or two, or it
opens and then immediately shuts down. I tried to repair it and then
reinstalled it, but nothing worked.

Have you tried running ScanPST.EXE on your PST file? It's a long shot but it
might work.

Had a similar problem, with Windows XP/Office 2000. After opening Outlook,
after about 2 minutes, I got an error message that "Microsoft Outlook has
generated an error, and will shut down."

After several days of trying to fix, I broke down and spent the $35 for
Microsoft to solve it in less than a minute, by disabling an add on that I
did not even know existed: "Net Folders."

Try the following:
In Outlook, go to Tools, Options, Other, Advanced, Add In Manager; then
uncheck Net folders if it is checked.

Fixed the problem for me.
