Outlook 2000 won't save passwords

Kim Odell

My ISP (Earthlink) has recently changed their outgoing
server settings to require authentication so unauthorized
people can't use Earthlink servers for outgoing
messages. That's okay with me, BUT:

When I go into "Tools" to change the settings, I have to
enter my password as usual, and I've check "Remember my
password." Unfortunately, Outlook doesn't save the
password. Every outgoing e-mail gives me a message that
it did not reach the recipient because I need to
configure my server setting to accommodate
authentication. When I do that during the same session
and re-send the e-mail it goes through fine.

The next time I open Outlook 2000, the passwords have
disappeared again! I've been through this with my ISP
three times and they have finally concluded that it's an
Outlook problem, and suggested that I reinstall Outlook.
It came with my Windows XP software. (a) How do I
reinstall Outlook 2000 only, without reinstalling all of
XP, and (2) after reinstallation, will my server settings
still be there?

I've never had to do this before, and it's driving me
crazy! I really to get the problem solved, PLEASE HELP!!

Hal, thanks so much, I'm trying this but I've hit a
snag. In the articles you recommended, under the
instructions for removing user account information, under
Windows XP, I've done items 1 thru 7, but item 8
says: "Click to select the 'Reset permissions on all
child objects and enable propagation of inheritable
permissions check box.'"

However, that option does not appear. The only choices
are: "Inherit from parent the permission entries that
apply to child objects include these with entries
explicitly defined here" [which is checked] and "Replace
permission entries on all child objects with entries
shown here that apply to child objects."

What now? Thanks again...

I too have been wrestling with it for days now. The Microsoft KB Article
does not help for the Registry does not allow the removal of the "Protected
Storage System ..." key. When searching for solution I noticed the dates of
these problems. Could it be that the SP2 is to blame and ought to be
uninstalled or patched?

In addition I just tries to download mail with Outlook Express as opposed to
Outlook 2003 (my default) and the same thing happened. So it is neither
Outlook's nor OE's fault, but must have originated in Windows. It is nice to
say but I still don't know what to do except to uninstall WinXP SP2 and
hope.

I believe the correct choice is the second checkbox, "Replace permission
entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child
objects"

The Protected Storage System Provider problem affects both Outlook and
