outlook 2000 will not open. Reinstall did not work

I have been using Outlook 2000 without any problem. Suddenly Outlook 2000
will not open. I get the error message "Microsoft Outllok has encountered a
problem and needs to close."

I have uninstalled all of Office 2000 and reinstalled it. Other office
applications open correctly but Outlook still does not open. I even
reinstalled Windows XP Home edition over itself using the repair function and
new installation. This did not solve the problem.

Related? Several days after the above, Internet Explorer 6 with sp3 started
not opening untill I tried starting it at least 3 times. IE6 also failed to
close.

You should check your event viewer and also scan for spyware. If there are
any entries in the event viewer, please post the event ID number and the
corresponding source.
To get to your event viewer: start > run > eventvwr <enter>

There appears to be hundreds of events listed under "applications",
"security", and "system". Some events listed under "applications" show
"ERROR" beside them.

I am summarizing entries in the Event Viewer. Under "APPLICATION" there were
1,749 events
ERROR SOURCE EVENT CATEGORY
" Application Hang 1001 none
" " " 1002 101
The above errors repeat frequently
warrning Frontpage 5.0 1000 none

IN THE "SECURITY" FOLDER
all sucess

IN THE "SYSTEM" FOLDER
warning PlugPlay Manager 260 none
error Disk 11 none
error Service Control Manager 7023 none

The above are repeated inter mixed with events that apparently had no
problems.

Thank you for your continued help!

Ms. Orland:

My e-mail client (Outlook 2000) , Internet Explorer 6, and Outlook Express
all started having multiple problems at about the same time. Out of all of
the above applications Outlook 2000 failed first. When the problems started,
Outlook 2000 never would open or run. The above mentioned interlaced
applications often would not open, or if they did finally open the
applications froze and locked-up my entire omputer. Also I started getting
error messages sayiing that Windows XP could not find the default e-mail
client.

Since running applications with Windows XP being the operating system, a
single program crash should not be caused by protected memory violations -
nor should the complete operating system fail with the failure of a single
application.

The above problems seemed to indicate a malfunction dealing with the LAN or
a communications problem with my e-mail server. I switched to Outlook Express
as my e-mail client. I immediately noticed that Outlook Express would not
download mail from the e-mail server. Outlook Express changed my POP3 account
from mail.xxxx.net to a numeric URL every time the e-mail client was closed
and then reopened

I checked the setttings of my computer's ports and found that ports: 143 ;
110 ; 25 ; 445 ; and 1433 were closed.

The closed ports blocked the e-mail server, directory server, and SQL server
from being able to communicate with the above mentioned applications.

Ports are now opened for IMAP ; POP3 ; SMTP ; and MSFT DS. All of the above
applications are now able to communicate with their appropriate servers.
Outlook 2000 appears to be working correctly. I expect that I will find that
the other applications run smoothly also.

I have not found any mention of this solution anywhere on the Microsoft web
site nor on the World Wide Web. Purhaps my problem and its solution will help
others with simular problems. I hope that this issue will be addressed in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base.

I believe that it is safe for you to close this case.

Back to the mundane.
