Outlook 2000 is slow starting on my Windows 2000 machine. All updates
and service packs have been applied. The computer is totally free from
adware and viruses. EZ-Trust is the antivirus program. There are no
add-ins installed in Outlook. The PST file is much less than 2GB. The
PST file has been compacted.

When Outlook starts, it promptly determines that there is mail to be
downloaded, but it takes as long as a minute to download the first
message. After the messages download, it works just fine.

The only other problem I can think of is that Outlook will not shut down
on its own. I have to use the Outlook Shutdown Add-In. I have gone
through all of the shutdown problem solutions in detail, but I cannot
identify the source of the problem. Maybe the two problems are related.

How can I uninstall and then reinstall Outlook, since it was installed
as part of the Office suite?

What exact size is the pst?

You uninstall by modifying your Office installation, however that rarely
fixes a problem

Here is probably more than you wanted to know, but I have two follow up
questions.

The PST was 850MB when I posted this message. Normally in July, I
archive all items for the previous calendar year, so I decided to do so
today. After I archived 2006.pst, the resulting file content was 250MB,
but the outlook.pst file did not shrink. I thought I had exported
instead of archived.

After confirming that I had archived, I decided to compact Personal
Folders. It took about 30 minutes to do so. That is the first time that
compacting has ever taken more than a few seconds. (The explanation I
had been given was that Outlook compacts automatically.) After
compacting, outlook.pst was 250MB, as expected. Outlook does seem to be
snappier, but it will take a while to see if things really are better.

The new questions are this: Why did archive leave some messages from
2006 in Outlook even though I told it to archive any messages prior to
1/1/07? Also, if I archive again and point to the 2006.pst file, will
the pst file be amended or replaced?

Archive functions on the modified date.
Its a while since I used OL2k but I seem to recollect that some msgs, for
some reason, had an 'blank' modified date
If you open the current Archive in OL you can drag & drop msgs to the
Archive.
Providing your Archive settings are to move msgs to the designated archive
they will simply be copied to it, should you 're-archive'

You might care to run the repair tool, scanpst.exe, with OL closed (ensure
it has) on your data file, several times.
