Outlook 2000 excessive CPU usage

I'm running Outlook 2000 under Win XP Professional and using the Task
Manager, the CPU usage seems pretty constant at 38%. With my wife logged
onto the same computer as a separate user, the usage is double with Outlook
running under two instances. Why is Outlook using the CPU so much, even
when it is not sending/receiving?

This machine is relatively new to me and I don't remember this occurring on
other XP computers I own.

Thanks in advance.

Has Office 2000 service pack 3 been applied? (Look at Help > About Microsoft
Outlook. SP # should be right at the end of the product name/version
number)

Reason I ask is that there is a known CPU utilization problem for Outlook
2000 SP3. Microsoft has patch that can be downloaded and installed to
correct. (The issue only effects Outlook 2000 SP3 in Internet Mail Only
mode)

Yes. I downloaded and installed it yesterday.

I'll give it a try. I have Office 2000 and I also have FrontPage 2003 so
I'm never sure what gets updated.

Just so you know, this isn't the only cause for high cpu usuage in Outlook.
Other things could cause it as well. I just happened to pick one thing that
could cause it based on limited info. Some of the other things that could
be contributing is (and this list isn't inclusive)...

1) security products (antivirus, antispam, .etc) that integrate with Outlook
to protect mail

2) desktop search software (this can even include your favorite ie toolbars
like yahoo, google, msn)

3) 3rd party addins (e.g. Dell/Apple ship some of their products with
outlook addins that can drive outlook nuts to where there is either high cpu
or outlook is unstable [causes lockups/crashes])
