Outlook 2000 crashes whenever I empty deleted items folder

I am running Outlook 2000 on Windows XP. Whenever I try
to empty my deleted items folder, Outlook crashes. I have
tried to delete individual messages, but I have the same
problem. I have also tried moving the messages to other
folders, but I have the same problem when I do this

Is your mailbox on an Exchange server or in a PST? If the latter, how big
is it? If I were in your shoes, I'd first try compacting the PST. If that
didn't work, I'd create a new PST, copy to it everything in the old PST I
wished to keep, make the new one the default delivery location, close the
old one, and after restarting Outlook, delete the old PST.
