Outlook 2000, 2002 (XP) & 2003: Font sizes change after sending email

Hi all,

There has been several posts regarding this issue and so far I can't
find any with a solution. We are having the same issue with Outlook
2002 (XP) and 2003 where after sending a HTML email, certain words or
sentences increase in size.

We logged a call with Microsoft and after testing over a 1 year period
they have finally acknowledged that there is a fault. Below is the
response from Microsoft:

This issue is a bug that is identified to be being caused by compliance
issues in Internet Explorer (and not an Outlook issue).

Symptom:
=========
This issue has been reported using different Outlook versions (OL2000,
OL2002 and OL2003).
Parts of message body text in received HTML messages are displayed
enlarged.
Users don't see the enlargement while editing. The message text is
shown enlarged while viewing the HTML message in the Sent Items folder
of the sender or at the recipient.
Issue happens sporadically and is not reproducible.

Cause:
========
This problem occurs due to the use of FONT element/tag which is now a
deprecated HTML Element
This particular issue is seen in Internet Explorer 5, Internet Explorer
6, Internet Explorer 7, all versions of Outlook Express, and all recent
versions of Outlook through Outlook 2003. The common factor here being
that all of these email clients use Internet Explorer to render HTML.
The only email client that will display this behavior while EDITING is
Outlook Express, which uses code from Internet Explorer to render email
during the Editing stage. Microsoft Office Outlook has its own internal
HTML editing functionality, and that is the reason that this is not
apparent during the editing stage.
This problem is not evident in Outlook 2007, as the Office 2007 Suite
of applications do not use the FONT element, and rely on CSS attributes
for formatting. The most recent HTML standard, HTML 4.01 from December
1997, states that the FONT element is one of 10 elements that have been
deprecated from the HTML standard. So it is not helpful to alter the
code base or provide a hotfix for Internet Explorer to better support
an element that was deprecated nearly 10 years prior.

Workaround:
================
Workaround #1 - Configure Outlook to use Word as the editor when
composing mail.
Workaround #2 - Use Outlook Express so that you can see the way the
message is rendered prior to sending.
Workaround #3 - While using HTML as message format and Outlook as
editor, set the "Stationery and Fonts" in "Tools | Options | Mail
Format" to use a Stationery (for ex: BLANK) and set a
compose/reply_and_forward Font (for ex: 10 pt
Tahoma) then set to "Always use my fonts" under "Stationery
Fonts"

We are currently trialling workaround #3 until 2007 is thoroughly
tested for our environment.

Hope this helps others out there with the same issue.
