Hi All!

I've got a really big problem with the office Contacts email list. We
use Outlook 2002.

The problem is that we have all our email addresses listed in the
Contacts folder. When we open a blank email and type a name into the
To: field (or any other field) it should a) automatically complete the
email and b) when the To button is clicked show the list of contacts
in some kind of order.

Although we have just over a thousand email addresses the searching
for an address after autocomplete is very slow.

Additionally, although when I look at the list of emails in Contacts
they are perfectly ordered from A-Z by surname, when I look at the
list after clicking on the To: button the order is all over the place.
Some addresses are by surname and some by forename.

I have tried setting all the fields so the data in each is input as
surname, forename. I have tried typing everything into the Surname
field in the format surname, forename. I have tried entering the data
so the forename is in the forename field and surname in the surname. I
have tried it the other way around. I have spent the whole of today
trying to get it so that anyone using Outlook to email someone does
not have to hunt up and down the whole 1,200 contact list before they
can email someone.

My boss will shortly launch himself into orbit unless he can se a list
of contacts in some kind of logical order. He says he is spending far
too much time on what should be a simple thing. But I cannot fix this
problem!

Your help would be very much appreciated!

Cheers
David

Clarify your post. State more clearly what you are doing and what you think
isn't working. You are asking about 2 unrelated features. Autocompletion
does not use your Contacts. It uses a cache of names from messages you have
sent.
The To: button brings up your Outlook Address Book which can be sorted here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change. >

Ah, ok. Thanks for that. In that case it is just a case of entering
email addresses.

My problem is that although the list of contacts is in order in the
Contacts folder, when I click on the To: button the list of contacts
(all from the perfectly ordered Contacts folder) are displayed in a
very random order:
John Smith
Jones, A
Keith Smith
etc.

There appears no way of ordering the existing list that pops up when
To: is clicked on. This list is apparently from Contacts. So I'm at a
loss as to why it should appear in a disordered state. I would ideally
like it to list everyone as Surname, Forename if possible.

Thank you. I will have a look at this today.

Best wishes
David

Yes, that sorted the problem out. I set the thing to sort according to
the Order By details. So the job is done, sanity/job/life saved.

Many thanks
David
