outline numbering and style templates

In Word 2003, I right-click and OPEN a user style template, a .DOT file, for
editing. I use STYLES AND FORMATTING and see that my headings 1-9 are
outlined numbered as I want, have no indent, and have hanging indents as I
want.

I tamper with Heading 9's numbering, making it "appendix" with A, B, C, etc
numbering. I leave number and text positions and indents as 0. I set FOLLOW
NUMBER WITH to SPACE. I set RESTART NUMBERING AFTER to blank. I notice that
TEXT POSITION / TAB SPACE AFTER: is grayed (not editable) but shows a faded
-0.63".

When I close and save the user template, then open again, Headings 8 and 9
are always fouled up with my hanging indents gone and with heading indent set
to 0.63". Sometimes, Headings 1-7 are fouled up with the same undesired
changes as have been applied to Headings 8-9.

Do you know what I'm doing wrong?
Do you know if Word has a default setting for TEXT POSITION / TAB SPACE
AFTER:? And, if so, how I can change it?
Do you know why editing Heading 9 affects Heading 8?
Should I be able to right-click, open a user style template, edit styles and
formatting, save, and expect to see the edits when I open it again?

Whenever you modify the numbering of any level of an outline-numbered list,
make sure you enter the Modify Style dialog through the top-level style (in
this case, Heading 1), even if Heading 9 is all you want to change.

I click Modify for Heading 1, in dialog box, Heading 1 is "blued" for
editing, I change to Heading 9, click "Add to template" readying to make my
changes, and get pop-up message "this style name already exists or is
reserved for a built-in style".

Is there some other way to "enter" Heading 1 and get to Heading 9 where I
want to make a numbering change?

Click Modify to modify Heading 1. Then select Format: Numbering to get to
the Bullets and Numbering dialog, which should open to the Outline Numbered
tab with the current numbering scheme selected. Click Customize, and in the
Customize Outline Numbered List dialog, select Level 9, which should be
linked to Heading 9.
