Out of Diskspace??

My wife's computer brought up the message: "You are running out of free
diskspace." It then offers to remove unnecessary files, however, this
attempt stalls.

In My Computer the C drive shows a total of 6 GB and free space 1 MB.

She only has a standard WinXP XP installation and there is no conceivable
way her files or programs can amount to more than a couple of GB. She has
been running this version for 3 years without any problems.

Where do I start troubleshooting this problem?

This is not unusual for a 3 year old system, especially if a regular maintenance routine is not followed. Try running the Disk Cleanup utility.

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup. The wizard will show all of the files that are safe to delete and will compact the file system. Click the More Options tab and select the System Restore button. This will allow you to delete all but the latest SR files which can free up a huge amount of space.

To keep the system performing at its best its good to do maintenance
tasks like disk cleanup and defrag regularly.

WAy too small for XP. Time to get a larger hard drive.

Temp files and internet cache files add up.
