Problem: Cannot see the other computers in the workgroup

Situation: We have several computers in the workgroup, 13 total including
problem computer. Checked all the settings in XP. Everything is the same,
ie. simple file sharing disabled, local security policies are the same. Only
difference is that this is a laptop on a docking station. Firewalls are
disabled. Can ping all computers. Can map drives to other computers from
the command prompt with "net use".

Question: What could be causing the laptop from seeing the other computers?

Luis,

I'd bet you have a browser problem (I'm not talking about Internet Explorer).

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers give the same result.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

I am having the same problem! I am trying to add a desktop to my workgroup.
I can see the new computer from the other older computers but I cannot see
the old computers on the new computer. I also cannot ping to the old
computers from the new one.

Matt,

Please check your browser settings, as I instructed Luis to do.

If that's no help. please start a new thread (with unique and descriptive
subject) with more details about your problem. Posting your own problem, in a
thread started by someone else, benefits neither you, the OP, nor the helpers
here. Help us to help you.

Can't see other network machines problem is a old protocol remanent
around NetBEUI. Try install both IP & IPX or NEtBEUI protocols. Note:
this add data traffic across the network.

As I stated earlier I was haivng the same problem. I fixed it by installing
SP2 for XP. My other computers were already running SP2 but the new one was
still running SP1. This immediately fixed the problem and I can now see the
other computers.

Maybe this will help. You can get it from the windows site. When you go to
updates use the custom button not the express install option. This will
allow you to see SP2 for download.
