OT: what is best product to resize a 150GB partition

A

Angus Comber

Hello

I tried repartitioning a 150GB partition using Partition Magic v4 but failed
with some init failed error. Currently only Windows 98 SE is installed -
want to create two partitions on disk.

Anything free would be good but don't mind paying to get the job done.

If you want a "free" partition resizer, try "Partition Boot Manager" by SA
Development.

You use it for 30 days and as long as you limit it to 4 partitions, you can
keep them after that time (so, if you made 5 partitions, it'll delete one,
leaving you with some wasted HD space. Plan accordingly before you run it.
Here is the link:

http://www.sadevelopment.com/

and here is the disclaimer:

"Partition Boot Manager is based on a 30 day trial period. The program is
fully functional except that it is unable to restore a backed up
configuration. After 30 days the trial period will expire. The user can
contact us for a 30 day trial extension if they need more time to evaluate
the product. Once the trial has expired, users will have to either (1)
Uninstall PBM and choose to keep up to 4 partitions (the maximum that will
fit in the traditional partition table), or (2) Wait 30 minutes when their
system restarts before being able to boot an operating system, or (3)
purchase a license for PBM which is quick and simple to install without
losing any of their settings."

You will have certain problems using the full extent of this drive in Windows
98.

The Windows 98/98SE 64GB barrier is not a limitation of the operating system
at all. Rather, the barrier is caused by the Microsoft disk setup tools,
FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM.

Additionally, Windows 98SE has a default limitation of 137GB for ATA
interface disc drives. Theoretically, you could then partition your boot
drive for 137GB, but a limitation of the Microsoft SCANDISK and DEFRAG
programs reduces the practical size to 127GB.

Update Partition Magic. The one you have is 3-4 years old. The current
version is 8.01. Open the wallet and spend some money (-:

While this is a shareware product, you can work from the bootable floppy it
creates and work on the system partitions without installing or paying for
it. It will be fully functional, just cancel setup and enter maintenance. I
hope that you will find this product worth paying for, I did.
