OT Tip Selecting all fields of a table in QBE

G

Gary Walter

I noticed this the other day...
and maybe not new to some....

With a large table, sometimes you
want to add all the fields to the grid
in QBE.

------------
Double-clicking on the top header
of the table will select all the fields.
-----------

Then you can drag and drop selection
down to grid.

Simple...but I didn't know and thought
maybe worth sharing.

I gather you might do this because you want to set criteria on some of the
fields. It can sometimes be easier to just add the * to the grid, and then
add only the fields you want to set criteria. Just uncheck the show on
these, so you don't get them twice.

I usually find it makes for easier reading, rather than a column for every
field.

Hi Joan,

I agree with you on this.

I remember reading somewhere
that the "*" has no place in a
production db...and thought then
that I must really suck as a db
programmer.

But I do work with a bunch of data
from many sources and find myself
using functions on fields to clean up
(like really proper case a name so
that person won't be offended by a
report that shows "Joebob Mcaffee Iii"),
or split (like put first name in a firstname
field, last name in a lastname field),
or alias a field (like "MAUTHR" is more
readable to me as "AUTHOR").......

I know it wasn't a "sliced-bread"
tip, but thought maybe someone
would find it useful.

Have a good turkey day Joan (and everyone else)!

I realized that; just adding a bit to you tip, was all.

Had mine over 6 weeks ago, but thanks! You too.
