{OT} time to dump 98 / ME

I find w2k pretty stable... Iuse avg, a firewall, a nat router, close
off unused services, and use firefox to keep down the malware
Where did you get definition on "unused services" in W2K? There are so many
running it is hard to keep track of them.

Imagine you bought a car with disfunctional brakes and steering, no
tyres, wrong windscreen wipers, no tail lights and broken gears. Bit
my bit things are fixed, but then you realize half the engine is
missing. "Sorry sir, we can't fix it, but you can buy a newer model,
it has the missing half of the engine, but we're not sure about the
rear axle, will be fixed next year or so, or not."
That's more or less the Micro$oft way of operating.

Yeah, right, try telling Ford that their 1974 model has problems. They'll
laugh in your face.

Oh, for that matter, for a serious vulnerability found in MacOS 8 , Apples
response was: upgrade to Os9 or osX.

This is a totally normal thing. You don't expect that they will offer
support for a product line forever. The year 2029 there will be people
crying that there are no updtes for Windows 2.0

Do you know how to do that on a Netgear router Ross, or where I can find
out?

Most Netgear routers have this disabled by default (atleast, mine does ;o)).

All that's required is a firewall to prevent the problem. Simply block port 139 if you aren't already.

That's odd, Ross says 136 and 445?

According to Microsoft it's ports 139 and 445:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx

excerpt:

Block TCP ports 139 and 445 at the firewall:

Although WebDAV uses TCP port 80 for outbound communication, TCP ports 139 and 445 can be used
outbound to attempt to connect to a malicious service and try to exploit this vulnerability. Blocking them at the
firewall can help prevent systems that are behind that firewall from attempts to exploit this vulnerability. We
recommend that you block all unsolicited inbound communication from the Internet to help prevent attacks that
may use other ports.

I note that MS just made EIGHT "Critical Updates" available for XP.

XP is freeware, now?
No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware, demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited software, trialware,
viruses or warez for me, please.

Hypocrite!

My system runs 16 tasks (clean), and I can do anything I need.
Internet, Gaming, Apps, Graphic, Digital Video and so on.

After some XP experience I feel 98SE is the last OS that do
what __I__ want, not what __THEY__want.

Win2k Pro for me.
In my opinion this is the purely marketings info. The day later
Vista will come, you'll see the copy of the above about XP.

Most likely.

Yuo don't get the analogy, you moron, do you. Micro$hit sells brandnew
products which are as faulty as hell, so you need updates, security
packs and patches forever, until Micro$hit decides to bring out a new
product and contemptuously neglects service to owners of the previous
one, which was faulty from the start, as will be the new product of
course.

Micro$hit, your greedy Maffia company!

How intelligent of you; noone is FORCING anyone of buying MS products;
you have a vast choice, MacOSX, Linux, BeOS, BSD. Instead of bashing
someone's product, you can be smart and use other one, because I find
continuing to use something that makes you nervous, as you just
proved, ingeniously stupid.

I use MS OS because it works for me, no problems at all with it. If it
doesn't work for you, use something else.

It's a free world.

Let me ask you, why are you using a system you don't trust? There are a
lot of alternative, believ me.

Because I started using Windows back in version 3.0. Since then, Windows
has s slowly become more and more untrusworthy with each version. I work
on other peoples' computers and need to understand the system they're
using, so I stick with Windows and do everything I can to make it
secure, even from Microsoft itself.

Recently I bought a new, small spare hard drive with which to fool
around and learn Linux (I went for SuSE), but as luck would have it, my
backup hard drive developed a few bad sectors and I had to use the new
drive as the new backup.

No, I will not attempt to set up a dual boot system. I haven't the time
or inclination to deal with the inherent problems in attempting to
create such an arrangement.

As for buying another hard drive, that will have to wait because I just
bought a new motorcycle and it's sapped my financial resources badly.

Derek,
Please calm down. There's no reason to call Luis names. And besides,
nothing could really be further from the truth since Luis is the author
of the excellent backup program, Cobian Backup:

http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/index.htm

Every person is entitled to their opinion and civil discussion is more
productive than the results one can obtain by being offensive. Just
because you disagree with Luis is no reason to call him names.

I've been guilty of bad behavior myself often in the past, but have
since learned that when emotion enters into a conversation, logic flies
out the window.

A very mature statement John.
I`ve long adopted the philosophy, "If you lose your `cool`,
you`ve lost the argument".
It`s actually very easy for us all to treat each other with respect.
In fact it can be quite a nice feeling.

Wrt tatoos (& piercings for that matter) they're sooooo passee. I
