I understand that if one detects an attempt to intrude on your computer that
if you have a detection program, you can send the data from the program to
MS's fraud unit, and they will start tracking the intruder. How do I get to
this unit? Is there another NG that deals with these issues?

I've never heard of any such process. I'd suggest you consult the
person/source who originally told you about this.

Actually, no.

You can take the logs from your intrusion detection software and use them to
report the offender to their ISP, or to the Police (if they're so inclined).
You could try reporting to your own ISP, but since it isn't their customer,
there is little that they can do.

The person who told me this mentioned that s/w like Peni-cillin were set up
with some sort of command window for an intrusion alert. If it came, then
one would print a screen image (provided by a button, or maybe
ctrl-alt-print). That would be sent to the supposed MS dept.
Maybe it's folklore. I'm just trying to find out if it's true, and how to
use it if so. Maybe the Peni-cillin folks know. It might be worth visiting
their web site.

Not true, AFAIK.

Wouldn't it make more sense to send the info to the people that offered
that service with their detection program?

geez guys either top or bottom post, not both...like playing pong...

there is NO bottom posting convention, it is up to the individual choice.

I find bottom posting is BACKWARD NOT conventional.

Lol, I can't help it if the OP chooses to post against standard bottom
posting convention.

and besides it isn't fraud to find your way into someone else's computer.
a crime yes, but not fraud.
if you find someone who cares, let us know. (I'm serious, it's virtually
impossible to find a law inforcement group who will actually put out the time
to track down the offender), you have to do all the work your self, then
present it to someone.

Yeah, but you also violate common netique by maliciously posting in
html, as well.

read the microsoft news group rules.

learn how to control configure your computer to display messages in the format of your choice.

or stay away from ms news groups.

crying wolf or the sky is falling.

any reasonably intelligent person would realize the posts have been virus scanned no less than 3 times and if you are smart enough to have a virus scanner 4 times before you get to read it.

quit whining.

Not relevant. What makes you think Usenet is limited to Microsoft's
tiny little world or it's servers?

learn how to control configure your computer to display messages in the format of your choice.

I do; but how does that prevent you from deliberately and rudely
ignoring Usenet conventions? I'm more concerned about the millions of
untrained users out there who don't know any better than I am about myself.

or stay away from ms news groups.

Again, Microsoft does not "own" Usenet.

crying wolf or the sky is falling.

No one cried wolf. The fact that html posts can contain malicious code
has been demonstrated time and time again.

any reasonably intelligent person would realize the posts have been virus scanned no less than 3 times and if you are smart enough to have a virus scanner 4 times before you get to read it.

Perhaps, but that same reasonably intelligent person would also realize
that the sort of malicious coding possible in html has absolutely
*nothing* to do with viruses, and would be undetectable to anti-virus
applications. Since you seem to think viruses apply, I guess you've
admiotted that you're not one of those "reasonably intelligent people."

quit whining.

No whining; just pointing out that you're probably one of the least
qualified people on the planet to be advising anyone on netiquette.

So because you are too lazy and too inconsiderate to configure *your*
software properly, people have to download two versions of your
deathless prose? One would be bad enough. I don't care how many times
it's been scanned.

Since you only posted plain text anyway, why send it in HTML when you've
been asked many times not to? Just because you can? Interesting that you
won't behave in a neighbourly way unless there's a rule to force you. It
doesn't make you look big or clever, it makes you look like a prat.

I hear a bratty child chanting: "Nah-nah, you can't stop me." You're
fond of the expression "net-nanny". The way you act, it seems to me you
need one.

I AM NOT POSTING TO USENET.
I AM POSTING ON A MICROSOFT NEWS SERVER.

if you are so lacking in intelligence to realize that, then maybe you need to go back to kindergarten.

and yeah it does have to do with virus or other malicious problems.
like I sad the posts have been scanned multiple times.

if you do not like it then ignore it.

my program is configured correctly, just the way I WANT IT.

you need to learn how to configure/control your system to your desires.
do not expect others to conform to you.

Firstly, posting in HTML is pointless because there's no way to ensure
the recipient will see exactly what you intended. Secondly, since (apart
from the nasty yellow signature) what you post is plain text anyway, do
tell why that is the way YOU WANT IT. Oh wait -- is it because someone
(many someones) have politely asked you not to do it? Or is it because
you enjoy looking like a prat?

I don't. I expect them to conform to longtime Usenet standards which
*are* standards because they're sensible, efficient, less wasteful and
considerate of people on slow or expensive connections. And yes, before
you make that idiotic claim again, you *are* posting on Usenet.

Since every HTML message you insist on posting includes a plain text
version, my (correctly configured) newsreader offers me the choice of
reading your blather in either mode. Please don't worry your head about
my system setup; you need all your brainpower to concentrate on learning
what that key marked "Shift" is for.
