Greetings All (and Happy New Year),
As many of you knew my wife and I rescue and keep horses...
The following has been brought to our attention...
From the Boulder Colorado Weekly:
"Save The Wild Horses
....In November, as most of us were getting ready to stuff our faces with
turkey, Sen. Frank Burns, R-Montana, quietly slipped Rider 142 into the
must-pass Federal Appropriations Bill that kept our government in
business. The rider, now signed into law, eliminates decades of legal
protections for the horses and commands the BLM to sell for slaughter
huge numbers of wild mustangs. The measure is so harsh that many horse
and wildlife experts believe it will push the wild mustang to the brink
of extinction.
Specifically, Rider 142 instructs the BLM to sell for slaughter all wild
horses over 10 years of age, as well as younger horses that have been
offered unsuccessfully for adoption three times. This means that 14,000
wild mustangs will become horsemeat in January, to be followed by
thousands more. According to the BLM's own estimates, there are only
36,000 wild horses on public lands in the west, a figure activists say
is ridiculously high.
But protecting and preserving wild horses is no longer the government's
objective, despite a 1971 law that mandates just that. Declared a
National Heritage Species and called "living symbols of our Nation's
spirit" by Congress that year, America's wild mustangs, then numbering
about 60,000, were in danger of being butchered at the request of
ranchers—mostly cattlemen—who graze their animals on our land at
taxpayer subsidized prices and want all of the "forage resources" to go
toward fattening their herds. But Americans bombarded Congress with
hundreds of thousands of letters—at that time the largest public outcry
in American history—and demanded that Congress protect this enduring
icon of freedom and the Old West, and Congress responded. "
