OT News.Individual.NET not free soon

News.Individual.NET is going to charge for it newsgroup service.
It is only 10 EUR, see http://news.individual.net/

But is there any other free newsgroup servers.

Yes, there are. Extracting from the other four threads in this group
about this subject:

<http://groups-beta.google.com> - web-based access

<http://www.x-privat.org/index.php> - apparently for Italian residents
only, has a limited total number of connections

<http://www.yottanews.com/> - read-only (no posting) for free accounts,
tied to IP address (so useless for dialup)

Others have been mentioned, but they aren't completely free.

No posting/No binaries except on subscription, but free most text NGs (NOT
acf.discussion unless some brave souls want to ask more of a freebie)

Presumably you mean other than web based like Google. Well, there is
TeraNews...it has a one time setup fee of $3.95 and is decent. You
could check these too...

freetext.usenetserver.com

I got a "connection refused" error when I tried that URL, so I didn't
list it...

Should be free-text.usenetserver.com - it works for me. But as been
mentioned, it's read-only...

Yeah, I've used tera for years, earlier on they had problems where the
service wouldn't be available for a stretch of time (intermittently for a
few days at the worst point) but recently it has been stable, and for a one
time charge then free it is not bad at all. Of course, it IS a 50MB per day
limit for the free account, so if you're looking to download binaries you'd
want to consider something else.

You say that you "sometimes use". Can you elaborate on that?

In other words, why don't you use it all of the time?

Thanks.

Thanks for the tip about TeraNews. I just signed up ($3.95) and I've got to
say I'm *really* impressed with the speed. I'll miss
News.Individual.Net--it was terrific, but I also like the idea of having
binaries for the first time.

One must be a redirect to another address. freetext.usenetserver.com works
for me. Obviously both work so perhaps they have some limit on the number
of free?text users logged on at any given time, or they divert bandwidth to
paid users. Does that 2nd bit make sense?

Not sure who you're asking, I think I said something similar.

I use a paid service for binaries primarily, which is a gig a day. As tera
is only 50MB and free I prefer to get my money's worth on the paid service.
Sometimes when I hit the gig mark tho I flip over to tera and continue on.

I suppose for newsgroup threads from now on I'll just use tera, that alone
will be a chunk of MB daily.

Works here (for reading) too. free-text.usenetserver.com points to
freetext.usenetserver.com.

I'd guess you are right about there being a limit on users, I doubt
the free services are going to be able to cope with all the
individual.net users, plus there must be quite a few users from AOL
and one or two other ISPs that have recently withdrawn
usenet access signing up to free services.

If I didn't have an alternative from my ISP (all be it inferior)
I'd consider the reliability of individual net well worth the
small fee.

It won't do you much good with binaries if you don't go for a pay
account. The daily free amount won't give you much more than headers.

My ISP's news server only covers limited groups. I use teranews for
other groups. Thinking about it, I guess I might as well use teranews
all of the time.

Unfortunately this is going to become a bigger issue now that AOL has
discontinued their access to Usenet. NIN was the most oft recommended
server but now comes the news that they will stop their free access.

Dann einfach einen Proxy aus Deutschland einsetzen und eine
