[OT NEWS] Apple launches Bootcamp

M

mmmmark

Apple has introduced an _official_ way to run XP on Intel Macs--it's called
Bootcamp

This new, free, downloadable software by Apple will allow easy partitioning
and setup of XP on new Intel Macs. It will allow a choice at boot time by
holding down the
Option key, allowing booting into EITHER Mac OSX OR XP.

A momentous day in Mac history!

P.S. I still favor a virtualization scheme so I don't have to reboot, but
by using Bootcamp and making the partition FAT32, I presume I can still
exchange files back and forth easily.

I commend Apple for doing this, I think it really levels the playing field.
I was not gonna bother purchasing a Mac since I got OS X x86 running on my
PC now. But things have changed, with Boot Camp, I will be able to purchase
a Intel Power Mac with confidence knowing I will be able to easily run
Windows XP. They will possibly provide Windows Vista support in Leopard as
an incentive to upgrade when the time comes.

Hmmm... this could well be, the first time ever I have actually considered
in buying a Mac.
The computers themselves are bloody good spec, and although sometimes
expensive, this may be because of the OS itself or the machine, but their
tough, they look good and they *look* simple but sleek...

Andre...did you have any major issues ins installing OSX onto your pc? How
did you go about it? It's definitely something I'd be interested in trying
out :)

Jane: Trial and Error, lets get something straight if you plan to attempt
this, you are likely to format your existing Windows installation especially
if you have multiple installations of Windows.

Windows needs to be on the System Partition, and OS X needs to be on a
bootable partition, also, you will need a file to enable the Mac OS X
partition to be bootable, its called Chain0

Check http://www.osx86project.org to learn more, its a grea resource. I
still have some issues going on, my HP 840c printer is not compatible, and I
am using it through USB, bought the cable yesterday, also networking is not
working. Still, its just for testing, I am entrenched in Windows, am
surrounded by Windows. :) But, the Mac OS is definitely a cool "looking"
operating system, a bit awkward to use, since interface elements are not
placed in what you would call logical places in Windows.

To be honest, when comparing Aqua to Aero Glass, Windows Vista wins hands
down.

Thanks for the info Andre :)
I do have multiple hard drives, current setup is C>Windows XP, D>XP x64,
E>storage.

It's something I would certainly like to 'dabble' in. I will look into the
possibilities further.
