OT new Pentium D 945 OEM dirt cheap

If you know of a better deal on the Pentium D 945, please feel free
to post.

I've been doing a whole lot of window shopping. Overall, I'm
impressed by how much more eBay users pay for computer components
than they would at Newegg. Just found one good deal on an older
Intel 3.4 GHz dual core CPU, search eBay for "SL9QQ", $100 US
shipped (says he has 40).

I think those CPUs do not work on my P35 (or G33/35) chipset
mainboard even though they are socket 775.

Good luck and have fun.

I checked an Asus CPUSupport chart, and there is a wide range of
boards that will take a D 945. You should look up your motherboard
on the CPUSupport page of the manufacturer.

It's funny how selective the Intel boards are. For example, one of the
fancy Intel boards wouldn't support a particular high end processor, forcing
enthusiasts to buy another motherboard when the processor came out. Intel
pushes their processor sales, by means of that list. The list is not
always based on technical issues. The other motherboard makers don't
do that. The only time a processor doesn't show up in the list with the
others, is known incompatibility (Nvidia chipsets have a few issues), and
power issues (wimpy Vcore regulator too weak for processor).

They generally eventually add microcode support, a few months after a
processor starts shipping.

The Asus tables don't make it easy to make the association between
motherboard name and chipset, but I'll use the master list to fix that.
I'd say it would be easier to make a list of the boards that don't support
the D 945, than the ones that do. The list is pretty extensive.
