OT: missing posts

Peter Duniho

Well, it's on-topic in the sense that it has to do with this newsgroup. :)

I'm using a different news server to post this message, because my
question has to do with what appears to be a possible problem with my
posts (and perhaps other people's) showing up, and that in turn could be
related to the news server I've been using.

There have been a number of threads recently to which I've replied, but
seen no evidence that the others participating in the thread have seen my
posts.

Now, kill-files happen. If it's as simple as that, that's fine. Some
people just don't like to read my posts. But I want to check and make
sure there's not something else going on.

A couple of threads come to mind in particular: "Delegate Invoke in Thread
throws InvalidOperationException", and "LINQ Max".

People to whom I've make specific replies, but who do not appear to have
seen those replies, include:

-- "Bill McCormick" <[email protected]>
-- "jp2msft" <[email protected]>
-- "//www.chez.com/scribe/>" (that's Patrice)

At first, I thought it was just a Microsoft Communities problem. That's
what "jp2msft" is using, and I can see on their web site that my posts
aren't always showing up. But other folks aren't using that web site and
also don't seem to be seeing my posts.

There are fewer data points, so I'm less sure of this, but it looks like I
might not be the only person affected. For example, Ignacio Machin's post
to the "Delegate Invoke..." thread also didn't show up on the Microsoft
Communities web site, and nobody (including "jp2msft") replied to it
either.

It would be helpful to me, if you meet the following criteria:

-- you're one of the three I've mentioned specifically or you've been
following those same threads, and
-- you are sure you haven't filtered my posts out explicitly, and
-- you still don't see my replies in those threads

or if you have simply noticed replies to my messages in any thread,
without ever seeing the actual message I posted itself, if you could
follow-up here or send me email (peted at nwlink dot com) confirming the
problem. I'm trying to figure out if there's really a problem, and if so
to whom I should be complaining to get it fixed.

Of course, I'm hoping that by posting this via a different news server, it
actually gets through to everyone. Until I figure out what's actually
going on, I admit that's a bit of a leap of faith. :)

Thanks!
Pete

post I see from you was on June 18th.

Yes! That explains a lot.

And here I thought maybe I just smelled funny.

I'm using the MS server and Thunderbird.

I've wondered where you have been... I know I have not kill filed you.

I have not seen any posts from you in probably one week. This goes for all
groups, not just C#.

At work, where I am now, I use the microsoft news server. When at home, I
use Vista Windows Mail. I have not seen posts, nor apparent replies to you
from others, at either place.

I will say that I thought there was a general decline in posts this week,
perhaps because of vacations and such. Maybe there is more of a pattern.

Are you using ThunderBird as well?

Now that you mention it, I saw a few weeks ago some replies to Ignacio's
posts, but never saw his originals, except as they were repeated in
followups. What occurred on my end were "blank" posts from user "unknown",
followed by a reply that included text of a missing post. To the best of my
knowledge, I haven't kill filed him either. I have just keep killing various
incarnations of someone named Mike Williams on a VB 6 tirade...

HAHAHA. You ought to see what it's like in the VB6 groups themselves....

Pete;

The last article I see from you is a reply to Joroen Mostert in a thread
titled "Re: MemoryAccessViolationException and multimedia timer problem:"
on June 18th.

Now that you mention it, I have posted articles and not seen them until someone
replied to me.

Wow. Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like the problem is even more
wide-spread than I thought.

Interestingly, now that I've subscribed to
microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.csharp through a second news server, I
have discovered that the problem appears to go both ways. So far, the two
servers seem to be treating the newsgroup as almost completely separate:
today, no messages that I see on the news.microsoft.com version show up on
my ISP's server, and vice a versa.

I know that _occasionally_ they must get through, because I do see on my
ISP's news server messages that were posted to the Microsoft news server
(such as the ones I've replied to but for which never saw any
acknowledgement). But it looks like the volume of posts that don't make
it one way or the other is much larger than the volume that does. :(

Unfortunately, I don't have a solution (not that it's my responsibility to
find one, but I do have a vested interest in there being one :) ). I have
already gotten the ball rolling with a support group at Microsoft to try
to get them to figure out what's wrong and fix it. But I haven't received
any replies from them yet that suggest that they even understand what I
mean when I used words like "newsgroup", "Usenet", "article", etc. so I'm
not sure how hopeful I should be that they'd actually be able to correct
the problem.

For my part, I will remain subscribed to the newsgroup on both servers, so
that I can participate in threads found on either. Hopefully my brain
won't get too confused with that. :)

Not everyone else will have that option, of course. I'd say the main
thing is, if you've asked a question and don't seem to be getting any
replies, you might try posting the question via a different route. E.g.
if you're using news.microsoft.com (or the alias msnews.microsoft.com),
then try using a different news server or web site (e.g. Google Groups,
your ISP's news server, a free Usenet server -- see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet#Public_USENET_Servers for example, or
Google for "free Usenet", etc.). Conversely, if you're using a
non-Microsoft server or site, try using the Microsoft server or their
Communities web portal.

I sure hope this gets fixed soon. It's bad enough Marc and Jon, and maybe
some other folks, have switched over to the web site which will remain
unnamed, but this could make it really hard for people to keep a coherent,
consolidated participation on the newsgroup.

Are you using ThunderBird as well?

No, I'm using Opera's messaging features.
BTW, I don't even know how to filter out some specific user's post.

Unless they've updated it since I last checked, Thunderbird doesn't have
any useful filtering options. Opera's not a very good news reader either,
but at least it supports filtering. My options on my Mac are quite
limited, so I use what meets my minimum feature requirements, even if it's
annoying in other ways. :)

I'm using also the msnews servers and noticed this also occassionaly.
Sometimes some of my post don't appear either. Until now I was blaming my
news client which is Windows Live Mail...

Just so you know, today I started getting quite a few old posts, many by
you, from several weeks ago. I guess the system is getting cleared.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm now using Thunderbird versus Windows
Mail, and love it. I don't think this is related to the missing posts
though, as I switched a while ago.
